You're drunk and its hard to tell if you're happy and its true to say, you're older, wiser and fat This might not be the kind of difference you wanted but all in all do you really care about that Because its true, I do, I love you, you bastard Yes, its true, I do, I love you, you bastard Yes, its true, I do, I love you, you bastard so lets spend all our money Work, rest or play, what ever time you want to England let you down, it gave you away you care, they don't and thats the root of the problem sometimes its better to have nothing to say There are so many things that you won't even tell me There are so many things, that still really confuse me But, oh what I'd give to be half as confused as you.

UNCERTAIN 03:05
The shopping trip passes like a dream husband asks her where shes been Back to the house and family she knew Back to the hatred But she's trying to be certain Trying to understand Why it don't, feel like her world at all The kettle boils at quarter to five DJ says its great to be alive Don't let the grass grow under your feet At least untill next week She takes the gun up off the shelf Shoots him in the head, its good for her health He could just as well be asleep in his chair At least he died while she was Trying to be certain Trying to understand Why it don't, feel like her world at all
3.
EGO 03:14
My ego is in danger of leading me into trouble Think if I click my fingers, you'll come running at the double? Hey, thats enough about you, lets talk some more about me I'm not paranoid but then again, I think that everybody's out to get me But now, I'm the one to blame and theres pleasure and theres pain you can say what you like either way, I know i'm right My ego is in danger of leading me into trouble Sad when you're happy and I'm happier when you're sad Y'say i'm getting high horsed and that I'm probably unstable but I like it when you say that i'm acting like Clark Gable

She does'nt deserve it She doesnt deserve to be treated so mean She does'nt deserve it She doesnt deserve to be treated so bad And it upsets me, to see her with that guy Ha Ha, he's so clever, you should see her cry She does'nt deserve it She doesnt deserve to be treated that way She does'nt deserve it She doesnt deserve to be treated so cruel For someone who was so young and bright. It seems so sad to carry round a broken life in a shopping bag She does'nt deserve it She doesnt deserve the life that she leads She does'nt deserve it She doesnt deserve the mouth that she feeds Perhaps theres hope for you, but probably not The girl who once was so alive, I wish i'd forgot

NEVER HEAR 03:20
You say its good to be here, I think i'd rather be dead You talk to me and it goes right above my head Why don't you just sit down here and try to make some sense All the problems you imagine, leave me feeling tense You never hear a word I'm saying I may as well talk to the wall You never hear a word I'm saying You never hear a word at all You say its great to be here, the thought fills me with dread Pull the sheets back over my head and get back into bed You've got ideas that I cant believe and its amazing what you'll do Punch me, kick me, kiss me, hug me, till I behave like you. Take me back to the ward (x4) You say its heaven down here, hell knows why you think its so good There are more flowers in your head than there are in the fields and the wood Oh, its very nice, to rest in peace, with a rainbow on your door Theres another side to the story but its one you chose to ignore
7.
SEATON 04:41
Got a big hole in my pocket, got a big hole in my head Wasted all my wages and I woke without a bed Fingers smell of cigarettes and my breath smells even worse Looking out the window, someone send for me a hearse Told a girl I loved her, even though it wasnt true She got me calling on the phone, she's threatening to sue My heart feels like a desert and my mouth feels like sand My eyes wont open, theres a tattoo on my hand It funny how, life gets you down (x4) I get a flash of inspiration and it ends up in the pan Jump out of bed and I top up my tan Just a lonely person and i'm clutching at straws The more I drink, the more damage I cause I fall off the rails, when I lose my train of thought I will put a closed sign over everything I ever bought I will sell you my body, if you buy me a drink Coz, when I start drinkin', I dont have to think It funny how, life gets you down (x4)
8.
NAIL ME BACK 04:53
The whore is undressing and the pope is blessing The naked, the dead and the few I dont have much time to express all the hated That I'm feeling for you Nail me back on to the cross with a sense of guilt and greater loss While your banging on my door for more money Why do you pray for me? What do you say to me? Why do you pray for me? Bow down The choirs are singing and the priests are beating The school kids, for not going to mass I want to spit back from my mouth into your papal flask I won't confess all my sins, heaven and hell don't mean a thing They're making you feel so guilty for existing

When I get leave from a year at sea I wanna 'get some in' with a matelot mattress like you A mattress or two I joined up thinking that I'd 'feel a man' but I couldnt feel a thing, without a matelow mattress like you A mattress will do I'm so frustraited now I'm not at war but i can take it out on a matelow mattress, like you A cheap one will do I get so pissed, I can hardly walk through my old home port, to a matelow mattress like you A mattress like you

TIDAL WAVE 02:29
I'm riding on a tidal wave, across the sea salty waters cover me I'm riding on tidal wave, only problem is it's me Tidal wave, feelin' blue You broke my surf board heart in two Riding on a tidal wave for you Breakin' my surf board heart in two

Let me show you my inbred daughter like her mother and me but shorter Has an extra toe and pretty brown cross eyes With her grandmas hips From her Uncles thighs You just don't understand Our close extended family plan And let me show you my inbred brother He has a close related lover Has inherited wealth but he aint no fool He can stay at home swimming in his own genetic pool You just don't understand Our pure and pedigree, family plan Let me show you my inbred sister Yes, the rest of the world has missed her Let me show you my inbred cousin Courtin' strangers was too much fussin' and let me show you my inbred father No, he never bothered looking any further and let me show you my inbred nephew Likes to breed, coz theres nothing better to do You just don't understand Our introverted family plan We're inbred to buggery
13.
Are you coming to the gig on Friday? I play in a local band We're getting well known on the circuit We're gonna do a demo, when we can We got some pretty good arrangements and lyrics with a message But we don't like musical labels and we don't have a fake image We're indie, we're metal we're starting out but we're not bad We're folk rock, we're punk rock but most of all, I think we're sad we're just sad We're talkin' bout 'our generation' and the places we're escaping from I really think that we could 'make it' look, we're already on the first rung We got our selfs a good support slot with an ex-chart legend We could even do a tour of small towns If we only had a van..or fan It's so hard to take, that we wont get our big break but it all could have been a mistake So it doesnt really matter anyway We've nothing to say If comedy is the new rock & roll Then we're Led Zeppelin coz music has taken my heart and soul and it's left me a cretin We're just sad
14.
Fuck you, they know what you want You don't need to tell 'em, what they already know Recycle those teen ideals Get a colour spread in 'Elle' and The 'Rolling Stone' But you cry, oh its really not fair We want help and not money to burn You despair, coz theres no one that cares But they don't care at all It's a game, do you know what to do? Why not read Derrida and you can play too Here's a chord and some fame And I won't mind Bang! goes a marketing gun Another slacker lost on the highway to sell Was he Chris DeBurgh's bastard son? Running high on emotion again But he tried, Oh theres no one to blame It's a quick way of ending the shame So I sigh, oh its always the same, they dont care at all It's a game, don't you know what to do? Why not read Derrida and you can play too Here's a chord and some fame And I won't mind Watch out, soul is back A three striped runner with a beat thats wack Its another white art attack We can only take apart, what we don't put back and its true, i'm as angry as you but it comes to nothing They paint the town blue and keep it all for a few and we don't care at all It's a game, do you know what to do? Why not read Derrida and you can play too Here's a chord and some fame And I won't mind

Clothes around the mirror Floating down the Thames Tell me, did I wash my face in your sink? I forgot that your Jarman, going on Warhol Sitting in the cafe, going to the shops Is that how we used to dress up and dance? and its just like Jarman, going on Warhol It gets so hard to dwell, I dont really know, y'know? Who was with who and well.. Its not how it was Super 8 shows but it never can tell Jump cut to the bedroom Soldiers on parade now its time to burn the union jack I forgot, that its Jarman, going on Warhol Flowers in the garden, builders on the street Shall we take a trip to Devon today? and its just like Jarman, going on Warhol All the cautious eye to eyes, the sad hellos and glad goodbyes They're not really there All that happened inbetween, those magic moments on the screen Are gone, with no one to share We're laughing at the little things, The cut of suits, the size of rings but oh, wheres the despair? Wheres the despair that was felt when the camera was gone?
16.
I've had it with you, theres no more to say You twisted my reason, so theres no other way Than get weird and lose it again I fuzzied my logic, my thought missed the train and I only make sense to the ill or insane so get weird and lose it again I cried when I touched you Like a bleeding, black Madonna, carved out of ice now I know, I believe in a god that plays dice what does it mean? I love you so much, you got me feeling extreme Like in 'Ai No Corrida', getting very obscene Make it weird and lose it again The hairs on your neck, are to me the sublime Like a gathering storm, or a tingling spine Gettin' weird and lose it again I cried when I saw you So take a blade to my eye Andalusian dog I believe in the power of a paint and wood God What can it mean? I cried when I heard you Like the echo of the bang at the start of it all Is it true, Erich's right? God's an astronaut? what can it mean?

TOO LATE FOR IT NOW You say that you love me and that you care I thought the idea was to share You said it was forever, no compromise I can see the lies in your eyes Its too late for it now (x4) While we were out walking and just sitting talking I can always tell, well I might as well I got a head full of nails and a bag full of lies And its funny how you never look me in the eyes Love comes in fits and bursts but ours is a constant stop Someone pull the needle, coz I wanna get off And when they say that many a true word spoke in jest Well, when you told me to leave, then love had failed the test BIG IDEA You come in here with your big ideas Saying its the only way You come in here with your big ideas Messing up my day Talking words and numbers Always sounds the same Why dont you just go and take a hike coz, theres always someone else to blame

Once knew a girl called Kate Everything was going really great, then she left me Once knew a girl called Kate Everything was going really great, then she left me Left me for another guy Stitched me up and made cry cry, oh no Once knew a girl called Kate Now she's living in Notting Hill Gate with a teacher Drinking coffee, driving a 2Cv' She got me here on my bending knees Oh Kate (note. We clearly had'nt finished this one and think we practiced it once before playing live...once, also kinda inventing Indie-afro beat at the same time?? Vampire Weekend were obvs listening haha)

about

A compilation of tracks, digitised from 25/30 year old cassettes of The Whipping Boys ('89 -'95) The actual master tapes of the studio and home recordings are lost/mislaid atm.

Formed and based in Plymouth, although probably lost on many, who were'nt paying attention, as in their more youthful arrogance. chose not to play, what was for them, a disheartening, regular local pub circuit. They did play several nice gigs and supports though, at venues like, The Cooperage, The Academy, The Poly/Uni, a few other random things out of the city , including the legendary (their words) Fleece & Firkin in Bristol and a 'Breakthrough', new band showcase at The legendary (their words) Rock Garden in that there London.

Tracks 1-4 were recorded/produced by Dave Mcdonald, best known for his time with Portishead but who had also recorded many South West indie/post punk bands from that time at State Of Art studios in Bristol. He has since worked with artists including Air, Sigor Ros, Florence & the Machine, Adele, Broken Bells and Frank Ocean. Writing to him recently to remind him of his past he replied (edited) "...well that was a blast from the past, still sounds pretty good as well, hints of Dinosaur Jr?..and really has that feel of the early 90's...Dave mc"

They were also featured on the Daylight studios CD promoting bands from Devon and released for International music Day. Tracks were also included on many compilations on The Ruptured Ambitions label by stalwart curator of all things DIY, indie, punk & underground, Chris 'Wheelie' Whilsher.

All releases were mainly put out on cassette, available through mail order and the pre-interweb network of fanzines, as well as in local record shops. Some were even reverse shop lifted, into charity shops.

Alot of later tracks were self produced, recorded on a 4 track machine in a front room in deepest Mutley, The Plymouth Musicians Co-op practice room and a farm barn out of town.

In the absence of locating original DAT & master tapes at the moment, the audio quality of tracks here is perhaps uneven and a bit 'squashy', as its all been taken from very old cassettes, in some cases, 2nd or 3rd generation recordings. There has been a bit of re-EQing and tweeking here and there but we havent sweated over it, so hope you get an idea of the racket made anyway. We were always pretty Lo-Fi.

There are still a few more tunes (live/cover versions/alternate versions and other amusing unreleased stuff) lurking, so who knows, poss more to come? Piers Martin, Luigi aka MC Lunar, and Darren Johns from Scene Magazine were supporters, so theres certainly more clippings, reviews and posters/flyers etc to be scanned, so watch for new uploads of stuff in the bonus items section, when we get round to it.

Over six years The Whipping Boys morphed from cheeky C86 type indie shamblers into a post Grunge/pre Brit pop, inspired affair. We had some nice stuff written about us,we played some good gigs, were played on the radio, put out some ok music, a couple of cool labels came sniffing around, met plenty lovely people, had fun, cheekily changed the name to '£' - in tribute to Prince (see Will Telford's item from The Sunday Independent in the bonus section) - and called it a day. Steve and Rich left Plymouth to get lives and Kev joined Efford based Riot Grrrl band Persecution Complex but thats a whole nother story.

As was jokingly said in a recent interview - "7 out of 10, we could have tried harder"

If you missed them at the time...heres what you could have won.

Cheers
Kev Winser
